ABOUT THIS EVENT

THE WORKSHOP

Being the first neuroscience of dance workshop ever created, this unique course is designed to enhance dance skills based on what is known about the learning, execution, and observation of dance from the neuroscientific point of view. Joined with improvisation and embodiment exercises that will aid with creativity and mental well-being.
Dancers who have attended have benefited from improved memory, decreased stage/audition anxiety, better reaction times and increased learning speed, dancing in a more cost-effective and effortless way. Skills which are permanent and transferable to other domains in life! It is suitable for non-dancers, those who think they can’t dance and dancers from any background and level that are interested in becoming better performers and teachers.

for the 5 hours of class:

CONTENT

Theory
I – An introduction to the neuroscience of movement
II- Limbic system and complex movement
III- Cognitive Architecture of Dance (perception, memory, execution)
IV- Emotion and movement
V- Improvisation and movement exploration

This part of the workshop is dedicated to explaining the neuroscience of movement production and learning, the movement structures, the cognitive architecture of dance, the dancer's memory, limbic system, improvisation and embodiment.

Practice
I- Choreography learning exercises and memory techniques
ll - Embodiment and emotion
III- Improvisation, creativity and movement exploration exercises

This part of the workshop serves to apply the practice to the theory learned in the first part.

Note: You do not need to know neuroscience to attend.

ABOUT THE SUBSTANCIA NIGRA WORKSHOP AND THE TEACHER

Dance is considered one of the most complex forms of movement ever achieved by human beings. In fact, humans are the only species that developed the motor ability to: move in a deliberate and rhythmic way, communicate and express emotions through movement and extract qualities such as beauty from it (aesthetics)..

But how does this happen? How do dancers gather visual and verbal information and transform it into motor action in order to learn movements? How are complex sequences of movement memorised and performed? Over the past decade, neuroscientists have started to look at dance as an opportunity to understand the nature of human movement and action-observation networks.

Selene Swan is a dancer that has done her postgraduate studies in neuroscience where she joined her two passions by doing her research thesis around the cerebral phenomena beyond dance, having worked with one of the most influential researchers in the field. She worked as a mental health practitioner and is currently doing her studies on Dance Movement Psychotherapy and still takes part in current dance research. With her experience in neuroscience of dance and mental health she created the Substancia Nigra dance project to help break the science art division between dancers and neuroscience and instigate the use of dance as medicine. She intends to share the information she knows so that everyone can access and get the maximum benefits from dancing.
