This concert is sponsored by the Canberra Walk For Refugees. We are fighting for an #Amnesty4ManusNaruu and to #EndMandatoryDetenion. The purpose of the concert is to introduce people who perhaps don't know much about refugees to the issues in a non-threatening manner. The night will consist of excellent folk and folk jazz fusion music mixed with raw and cut back jazz and blues that can be enjoyed by the whole family. There will be also readings of poetry written by refugees to introduce you to these topics.
At this concert, Dawn Barrington from Denmark, in Western Australia will be performing. She is a folk singer and guitar player who composes a lot of her own music. This music takes a look at a lot of the social issues of our time, including racism, homelessness and refugees. She has written music with and about the men in our offshore detention centres on Manus Island. Come along and hear Dawn sing some of her original music, as well as playing some golden oldie protest songs from the 60s and 70s.
Performing with her will be Mileyna Cifali, one of Australia;s leading female guitarists and song writers. Mileyna plays originally crafted jazz folk fusion..Her songs are about humanity rights, love lost and found and nature. Her delicious vocals at this concert will be backed up by DJ Gosper.
Dorothy-Jane Gosper is an Australian harmonica player, singer and composer of blues/ jazz music based in Canberra. She has her own band and is just in the process of recording her seventh album “The Witness”.
From 2007 – 2009, she won several awards for Best Vocalist, Best Song and Best Instrumentalist at the Canberra Blues Society Blues Awards. Dorothy also was winner of the best Jazz/blues artist in the inaugural Music ACT Awards called the “MAMA’s”. Shewas also a top 3 finalist in the Australian Blues Music “Chain” Awards in the same year.
On 1 December, the day after the concert, we will march on Parliament House in the Rally For Humanity and Boat Regatta. We will meet at the Mint Oval at 1.30 PM and then march to Parliament House where there will be a rally on the lawns in front of the Parliamentary Forecourt.
